Custom Interiors Primitive Masks Hawaiian Tile
I started working with clay and making pottery in my senior high school year 1979. I made functional pieces like plates, bowls, and large containers. A primitive ceramics class with Jennifer Owens at Hui O No'eau was my inspiration for my recent creations of Saggar- fired masks and containers.
I wanted to make masks that appeared to have been buried and looked weathered like they were unearthed from an archeological site. I like the combination of textures and colors achieved when weaving fiber onto the masks. As a gardener, I am inspirited by the natural textures of plants. I wanted to apply this somehow to my ceramic pieces. Adding a headdress of locally collected plant materials, adds a unique personality to my mask pieces.
Fiber and textiles have been a source of inspiration for me also. I work with textiles while creating upholstery designs for clients from my interior creations business. I love ruddy raw textiles with lots of texture. I apply this to my weavings on my masks. I use materials like banana and coconut fiber. These fibers are strong and long lasting. They have a very earthy feel and fabulous color complimenting the surface designs on the masks. I hope my masks stimulate a sort of curiosity with people who view them. Maybe they might daydream about some long ago civilization
